Although other countries made the first move, when Massachusetts decided to recognize the union of two loving adults, regardless of biological sex or sexual orientation, it was the shot heard around the world. The greatest nation of our time was finally coming around to the idea that gay marriage isn’t really gay marriage. It is just what it is: marriage. Two people declaring their undying love for each other, and being recognized as a productive core unit of society, accorded all the protections to any contributing member of this generation.
But when Massachusetts said it would protect its married gay denizens, the requirement was that one had to be a resident in good standing of the Commonwealth. California, never one to be outdone, took it one step further: the newlyweds need no longer be residents. Like Staten Island of yore, the sunshine state effectively opened her doors to gay men and women and invited them to rest their poor and weary. And now Massachusetts is catching up, reveling in the prospect of the economic gains brought about by the pink dollar. And I say more power to them. Anything that advances my cause for the right to marry is a good thing.
Heterosexual Ladies and Gentlemen, hear this: ALL WE WANT IS EQUALITY. To be protected under the same laws that protect you. When Britney Spears can create and destroy the bonds of marriage in 24 hours, in some unholy mockery of a venerable institution: SOMETHING IS WRONG. When two women who have been committed to each other for more than 60 years, cannot make medical decisions or decide on estate issues when the other is ill, SOMETHING IS WRONG. When two complete strangers who contribute nothing to the betterment of society, and seek to corrupt the system and drain it of its social security funds, are given the right to marry for nothing but a piece of paper and a discount on taxes, SOMETHING IS WRONG. When two men, who are assets to the community, holding down steady jobs to pay the taxes that feed the pigs that run their government, are denied their right to love and raise children, SOMETHING IS WRONG.
WE NEED TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT.
And we will get there, one stupid fucking right-wing conservative at a time.
